Cuanza Norte, Angola, July 2, 2025 – The city of Hampton, in the State of Virginia (USA), paid an official tribute to the Province of Cuanza Norte, in Angola, by presenting its official medal of international recognition, as a symbol of the mutual commitment to institutional cooperation, cultural exchange and sustainable development.
The American delegation was led by the Vice Mayor of Hampton, Steven Brown, and also included the brothers of the Tucker family, direct descendants of the first Africans taken as slaves from Massangano (Cuanza Norte) to Virginia, in the early 17th century — considered the first African-Americans recognized in the history of the United States.
The ceremony took place in Cuanza Norte, the historic birthplace of Massangano, and was marked by moments of strong symbolic and emotional charge, representing a reunion between the history of Angola and the ancestral memory of the African-American diaspora.
During the ceremony, Vice Mayor Steven Brown emphasized that this tribute “is a tribute to the motherland of many of our ancestors and a step toward reconciliation and building bridges between our peoples.”
The presence of the Tucker family moved those present, reinforcing the ties of blood, history and dignity between Angola and the United States. The American delegation also expressed interest in developing joint projects in the areas of education, historical tourism, cultural exchange and ancestral memory.
This gesture symbolizes a new chapter in the relations between Cuanza Norte and the city of Hampton, uniting past, present and future in a common vision of memory recovery, historical justice and fraternal cooperation.

A comitiva americana foi liderada pelo Vice-Prefeito de Hampton, Steven Brown, e integrou ainda os irmãos da família Tucker, descendentes directos dos primeiros africanos levados como escravizados de Massangano (Cuanza Norte) para a Virgínia, no início do século XVII — considerados os primeiros afro-americanos reconhecidos na história dos Estados Unidos.
A cerimónia teve lugar no Cuanza Norte, berço histórico de Massangano, e foi marcada por momentos de forte carga simbólica e afectiva, representando um reencontro entre a história de Angola e a memória ancestral da diáspora afro-americana.
Durante o acto, o Vice-Prefeito Steven Brown sublinhou que esta homenagem “é um tributo à terra-mãe de muitos dos nossos antepassados e um passo em direção à reconciliação e à construção de pontes entre os nossos povos.”
A presença da família Tucker emocionou os presentes, reforçando os laços de sangue, história e dignidade entre Angola e os Estados Unidos. A comitiva americana também manifestou interesse em desenvolver projectos conjuntos nas áreas da educação, turismo histórico, intercâmbio cultural e memória ancestral.
